Productivity during a global pandemic

As a college senior working on my graduation assignment through these unprecedented world events has been challenging. Just as I’m sure it has been challenging for many of you as well. However, as I scroll through social media, I keep seeing these tweets stating how “it is not normal to be productive during these unusual events and it’s okay to just be okay and prioritize wellness.” So, let’s talk about this.

The first time I read one of these statements I thought yes, this is what I needed to hear, me being unable to focus and produce my best work is not my fault, after all we are living through historic events. And yes, we are living through historic events nevertheless it’s understandable to prioritize your mental health over productivity. And yet most schools haven’t completely shut down and we are all still being expected to complete assignments, study and take exams, or in my case complete a graduation assignment. Seeing these messages that its okay to not work is fine until we forget that our school might not be so understanding and we miss a deadline and must re-sit a course or until we fail a course and realize we might have to repeat the year due to missing credits.

While some may have the luxury of taking it easy during these crazy times others don’t. Try to keep that in mind next time you’re telling others to “take it easy” and instead maybe just ask how you can assist your friend during these hard times. If we help each other out, we might just get through this insanity a little bit stronger than before.
