Is it okay to unfollow my ex?
Updated: Dec 12, 2018

Sometimes you find yourself in a situation where things fall apart; your relationship comes to an end. Something I personally overthink about is if I should delete or unfollow my ex from my social media platforms.
One of the reasons why we spend our precious time overthinking if that’s a good idea is simply because we don’t want to give the impression that we are hurting or being immature about it. Instead, we want to look brave, the bigger person – make them feel they are the ones who lost. Now, back to the main question, is unfollowing your ex an immature thing to do?
As a matter of fact, it’s normal to feel like clicking the unfollow or delete button, simply because you want to move on. It’s tough if you are watching their Instagram- or Facebook posts on your feed while scrolling. The worst part? Every time a new post comes up, you want to dig and find out more [or am I the only one?]. Have you had that thought, “Oh I’m definitely over that prick!” but, BAM! a new post pops up and you’re back to square one?
I once read a quote of a YouTuber, Lily Sing, “We’ve convinced ourselves that tweets and Instagram pictures are associated with our strength and pride”. We waste our time posting and snapping that we are having a great time with friends, being flirtatious in clubs and making 'new friends' – making sure our friends are there capturing every single moment so we can share on our social media to ensure our ex that we 'have finally moved on.'
But, isn’t that attitude which makes us exactly immature? It’s okay. Don’t feel bad, we all have done it – at least I have! But, wouldn’t it all be easier if we just disconnected ourselves from those people who hurt us? We all want to feel free and liberated, why not learn to let go? To let go of those people and situations that might hold us back and hurt us?
Clicking that unfollow button is not immature at all. Consider it like taking care of your mental health and your positive environment. Sometimes, it’s necessary to let people go, simply because they are too heavy; I’m not speaking about their actual weight. But, about the amount of stress, negative thoughts and emotions that they manage to move into you. Let's be real – sooner or later that person will start dating again and sharing their love interest all over Instagram and Snapchat, while they go to the movies, beach or concerts.
Start protecting yourself and click that button before it’s too late.
Having them on social media will probably make you feel like you must compete against them, to ensure them that you’re happy and moving on with a nice drink in your hands. However, wouldn’t it be a thousand times easier to just block them and take it easy on Instagram? I mean, we all know how hard it is to keep an amazing Instagram feed.
After all, remember that, in the end, there was ‘probably’ a valid reason that your relationship didn’t work out. Rather on focusing on looking brave on your social media, start focusing on yourself and enjoy your time with your friends. They most certainly have missed having you around!
