Birthday Disappointment
When everything is nice but not what you expected

In the last week of September, I celebrated my 27th birthday. Not a particularly huge milestone but, still, another year come and gone is always worth celebrating. I had no special plans, all I wanted was to celebrate my special day with my friends. However, as it is a celebration there are always certain expectations, like good food, cake, candles and, if you’re at a restaurant, you also expect good service. We ended up at this cozy restaurant that had some good reviews and enough options for different types of dietary restrictions. Sounds like the beginning of a nice celebration, right? WRONG! While everything was nice, it was just not what was expected. Especially when, an hour after you order your food, it's finally delivered and then it’s just raw and must be sent back. So, you get to spend your birthday dinner starving while watching everyone eat their meals. The waiter mocks your friend when she’s just trying to order dessert. And, at the end, you get a bill with some double charges and the staff refuses to acknowledge their mistake. Maybe it’s because it was my birthday I had the expectation that when you made a reservation that specified it was for a celebration, they’d make sure to give you good service. Or maybe it’s the fact that I grew up in Aruba, where we have such a high standard for service, that anything less than is just unacceptable? I’m not completely sure but in any case, while the night was spent in very pleasant company everything else left a lot to be desired. Officially, my first disappointing birthday celebration has been my welcome to 27!
